Communication with the hosting company is a must. Everyone will have problems at some point. Make sure support is responsive and courteous.

Beware of some of the unlimited shared hosting. While your bandwidth or storage maybe unlimited, its performance is often not guaranteed and often suffers for over subscribing. The shared hosting providers often pack so many hosts into on shared facility it slows down the performance.
With a quality VPS you are guaranteed to have a minimum level of resources. Too, you probably do not need as much ram as you think. For most small web sites a linux VPS with 64 or 128 MB often suffices.

A VPS also allows you to run more applications. Many shared hosting providers only allow you to run their applications.

Why should one ever have to think of VPS, if the shared plan gives unlimited hosting facility.

I am still not clear on the VPS stuff.
