Who is hosting the most domains?

Funny, have you ever thought of which web hosting is hosting the most domain names? Out of curiousity, I tried to search around Internet today for the answers.

After some search and re-search, here’re some figures I digged out.

Web Hosting Company Domains
HostMonster 350,000
Hostgator 1,000,000
BlueHost 500,000
1 & 1 Hosting 10,000,000
Dot 5 Hosting Unknown
HostPapa Unknown
FatCow 15,000
LunarPages 150,000
HostRocket 50,000
Web Hosting Pad 200,000

Without surprise, global big names – 1 & 1 Web Hosting stands as the hosting company with biggest customer base. They claim 10 million domains hosted on their services.

Hostgator stands as the runner ups in term of customer amount with 1 million; while BlueHost comes third with 500,000 domains.

Large customer base = reliable services?

Some believe the size of the customer base reflects the hosting service quality. However it’s a nope from me - I don’t think the statement’s true.

While most purchase decision are affected by the size of the merchants, I disagree that hosting company with large customer base means they are good hosting company.

In fact, many hosting companies with large customer base are often oversold on their bandwidth and storage spaces, giving limited tolerance to existing customers in bandwidth sudden spike. They are in fact the bad web hosting instead! :D

Personally, I would go with those with average customer size as they normally have more flexible in hosting services as well as more time for customer support.

But hey, that’s for me.

How about you? Would you choose your web hosting company based on the amount of the domain hosted?
