Do you know there’s a newcomer in my hosting coupons collection? VPS Net, the popular VPS/cloud hosting provider, is on our list now.

Save 30% On Your First Month Bill With VPS Net

Upon ordering VPS Net, simply apply the promo code WHSR and you’ll get 30% discount on your first month VPS Net bill (check image above). And hey, remember to say “thanks Terry” when you are enjoying this exclusive discount. I wouldn’t have got this deal without him.

About VPS Net

VPS Net (http://www.vps.net) is one of the web hosts managed by UK2 Group. VPS Net focuses on VPS hosting, cloud hosting, cloud servers, as well as content delivery network (CDN).

There are quite a few well-known weblog and websites had switch to VPS Net in the recent past. One of them are Woo Themes – the famour WordPress Themes Provider. When asked about VPS Net, here’s what they have to say (quoted from VPS Net website):

Testimonial From Woo Themes
WooThemes switched to VPS.NET a little over a year ago now and have not looked back for one day. We’ve launched a whole bunch of new, niche services during our time with VPS.NET, in addition to the continuing growth of our main business. During this time, we’ve found VPS.NET’s scalability, flexibility and technical support to be the perfect companion to all of our ambitions and are looking forward to continue using their solid infrastructure to fuel our future growth.

VPS Net Services

Here are some quick views on VPS Net offers.

Cloud Web Hosting Service

For those who want an easy-setup cloud hosting service, VPS Net is a must-see. At VPS Net, the latest cloud technology is packaged up in simple VPS hosting packages (one of their offer, VPS Hosting). The web host promises 100% uptime (under the auto-healing features) and require no contracts for all new signups (pay daily or monthly and you can cancel anytime).

Content Delivery Network (CDN)

Besides cloud hosting, VPS Net also offer CDN service at a very affordable rate (price starting at $34.95 for 1TB data). A CDN works by caching your site’s static files, such as images, javascript, CSS and videos, and delivering them to your site’s visitors via the CDN POP closest to them. Since those heavier elements are being delivered locally to the visitor, it greatly improves the end user experience and makes your site load faster.

Cloud Server

Well if you are ready to run on the advance side, you might want to check out cloud server renting services. Although VPS Net standard cloud server is selling slightly higher than the usual market price (at $90/mo, VPS Net offers 3.6GHz CPU, 2256MB dedicated RAM, and 60 GB Disk Space) but its cloud servers come with a few advantages: you’ll get full server control (down to the root access), in-house developed API that helps site automation, faster disk (powered by 48 drives in RAID10), and server management service available at $10/incident or $99.95/mo.

Upcoming & Other Reading Sources

I am in the midst of an interview arrangement with VPS Net Chief Evangelist Terry Myers but in case you would like to learn more about the company now, Joost (founder of CSS3.info and Yoast) had done a few interesting Q&As with Terry Myers (Cloud Hosting, Cloud Servers, what’s the difference?) and Managing Director, Rus Foster (VPS Net Issues: What’s Up and What Will They Do About It) and I think you guys should go check them out.

I was doing my usual readings online and I found some (old) news: FatCow hosting now comes along with SimpleScripts.

SimpleScripts is an auto script-installer, it helps users to install and maintain web application and software in just a few clicks. Right now SimpleScripts support installation for more than 50+ open source web apps including bloging platform, content management system (CMS), forum apps, project management software, shopping cart, RSS, form survey, and so on.

From what I see, the function of SimpleScripts and InstallCentral are exactly the same. BUT, the upgrade does make sense and benefits the users, SimpleScipts provides much wider choice (more apps can be installed) and fastest updates (from my experience). In case you are into images, here are some print screen from the inside.

Here’s where you can get into SimpleScripts from FatCow Control Panel frontpage

Lots of scripts supported

Updates September 2011: FatCow Review by Peter Benson

I got this informative FatCow review recently via email and I think you guys should have a look at it.

I think you have FatCow rated too high

I tried FatCow for webhosting a local political campaign site based on good reviews like these. The price was decent – $44 for a year.

The campaign was successful, and I took the site down afterward. Unfortunately, I did not cancel the account, and it autorenewed at _$107_ for a year. When I went to cancel it, they told me there would be a $35 cancellation fee. When I said I didn’t remember seeing that when I signed up, they said it’s in "Terms and Conditions" – buried with a ton of legalese. Their "cancellation fee" is almost as much as the first year of web hosting. For what it’s worth, I had _much_ better luck getting a refund for unused time from JustHost.

Anyway, fool me once and all that. I told them I thought their policy was misleading and abusive, and I won’t be back.

(PS- They also take _forever_ to answer their phone – it took three tries to get this cancelled since one time I had to leave after ~20 minutes on hold and the other time I was cut off after a similar wait time.)

Anyway, I think you have them rated too high, and I think you ought to let people know about their loss-leader, bait-and-switch pricing and high cancellation fee.

- Peter Benson / Minnesota @ September 4th, 2011

Other Latest FatCow User Reviews

Now for more other FatCow user reviews – Quoted below are user reviews I read from elsewhere on the Internet. Sadly I note that many are unhappy with FatCow’s recent performance (email features and the phone support, especially). Perhaps FatCow has changed a lot since I signed up with them 3 years ago; perhaps some users are over-demanding; perhaps the company is now running under-staff …the reason behind these complaints are anybody’s guess.

As a smart Internet shoppers, you should always do your own homework, be skeptical to ALL (including mine) comments you read online, and NEVER hesitate to ask for a refund whenever you are unhappy with your host.

I would choose FatCow definitely! "When I first heard of FatCow, my response was, "What?!" It didn’t take me long to look through the features, and notice that the price was well within my range, so I decided why not. There were times when my website went down due to technical reasons I couldn’t understand, so I would contact their 24/7 help desk. Within minutes, my problem was either rectified or passed on to a tech support person who would figure out the root cause of the issue within a day or so. Not bad for the price in my opinion. I would recommend FatCow for anyone that wants a hosting company that offers ease of use and also friendly customer service reps. Check them out when you can!" – Jupiter / www.darryldsmith.com @ June 08, 2011.

Okay hosting, but email is quite bad. "I am pretty much ok with the web hosting service of fatcow, though file uploads and update times are inferior to other services. My main complaint is about their email service. It’s really bad in my opinion. Their web client is really bad. Folders are presented as names with "." separating the folder hierarchy. Apple mail and the mailboxes aren’t synchronized easily. Sent vs Sent Messages folders for example. The smtp server has constant problems and I’ve contacted customer support or hundred times. Certain letters aren’t allowed in the password either. I was told that the n-th letter in my password was not allowed. I was a bit shocked that they knew my password in plain text." Anonymus @ June 24, 2011.

FatCow rocks! "You can never be satisfied with the web host providers these days. I’ve been switching from one web host to another in the hope of finding the almost perfect one. I have always landed providers which if are not too expensive, they will fire back with downtime. This has made me hopeless that my shoe business will ever grow. Good thing, I learned about FatCow and I’m proud to say that I’m a satisfied subscriber. With FatCow, you don’t have to pay a pricey amount to experience quality service, uptime guarantee, and easy to use features and tools. Their staffs are always there to assist you, 24 hours a day." – Shelly M. @ July 11, 2011.

Okay hosting with very cheap price. "The truth is, you can’t expect too much when a host is only charging you the price less than a cup of coffee. Fatcow hosting is doing alright in my opinion and I love the fact that they are offering wide support of different hosting features. The new Simplescripts function is a stunner and I am betting that more users will be flocking in to the servers soon (geez, this means bad or good?). All in all, Fatcow is an average host with a very low price tags. As a budget finder, I am happy with it." – James @ July 19, 2011.

FatCow support is no help. "The first issue I had with Fat Cow was when I noticed that I had an alternate domain designation of .ca It was first noticed when I was not getting any emails I called support and I was able to get into my control panel there it was discovered that my emails had a .ca at the end not a .com as I had requested when setting up the account. This was fixed on the emails but little to my knowledge it was still present in my domain central section, I only found out about this when I received a bill for domain listing from the company in Austria that controls the .ca domain designation. Fat cow support was of no help in discovering how this alternate domain was associated with my account. I would assume that some sort of log is kept to track this. I never registered it in the first place, it obviously was the account rep that set the account up. And now it is time for my renew and the cost is 3X what i paid for when 1st set up so I will be leaving for another." – Anonymous @ July 24, 2011.

So again, before we end this post, I have to stress that my FatCow review (and so does everyone else) is written just for your reference. I am writing base on my preferences and personal experience – what I think is acceptable might be a no-good for you. Cheers!

Hey, I am terribly sorry if you missed the previous iPage’s weekend sales. Truth is, I was enjoying my week in Bali, Indonesia.

(That’s Tanah Lot Sea Temple – where you can enjoy one of nicest sunset scenes in the world.)

I didn’t get any notification about the promotion upfront and had no idea this was coming. I did manage to tweet about it (I brought my iPad!) from Bali on Saturday but I doubt many of you guys got the message.

Time Limited Offer: iPage Discount $2.95/mo

The good news is, for some unknown reason, the folks at iPage is extending the promotion and according to the site, at this time of writing, you have roughly another day. For the next (roughly) 24 hours, you’ll get a 58% price cut upon signup. The promotion slashes iPage price from $6.95/mo to $2.95/mo. (see print screen).

Get this promotion now, visit http://www.ipage.com within the next 24 hours.

Why you should have a look on this iPage promotion

A few reason why I think this promo is a great one:

1. It’s A Great Savings The price cut, from $6.95/mo to $2.95/mo is H.U.G.E. Take 24 months subscription for example, that’s almost $100 savings. Everything you get is the same; the only different is that you will be paying much lesser than those who do not signup during this promotion period.

2. It’s (kind of ) Rare I don’t often see offer like this from iPage. In fact I was a little surprise when I noticed the huge discount. Ever since the host raised its price tag early this year, I thought the good days of cheap good hosting were (sort of) gone. Well, apparently I am wrong (for the next 24 hours).

So hey, in case you are looking for a budget host or you are still wondering if iPage is a go, make sure you check out this iPage discount. To learn more about iPage, feel free to check out my updated iPage review.

I love Hostgator. Anyone who spent long enough reading at this blog knew that I am a big Hostgator fans. And, there’s one extra reason to love the Gators more.

Windows Hosting Price: How Low Can It Goes?

The hosting company is now offering Windows hosting at super-duber-low-price. I am not talking about $1 or $2 discount. I am talking about the kind of discount that will change the landscape of entire Windows hosting business. For years, Windows users have been paying a lot more than Linux users for web hosting.

  Not anymore.

Things changed overnight with Hostgator’s latest Windows Hosting Promotion.

Hostgator is now offering unlimited Windows hosting at $4.46/mo*!

I repeat, $4.46/mo* for Windows hosting with unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth, Plesk control panel with Microsoft SQL, Access Database, ASP, and ASP.net features.

What I think about Hostgator?

I never try Hostgator Windows Hosting before but I believe my experience as a BabyGator user could be a good reference for all hosting shoppers. To learn what I think about the Gators, you can read my detail Hostgator Review.

And here’s the link to Hostgator Windows Hosting (open in new window):
http://www.hostgator.com/windows-hosting.shtml

*Important Note: The price $4.46/mo is based on discounted price using my special promotion code (WHSR25Discount). For normal promo price (code: Spring), the discount is only 20% and the monthly price will be $4.76/mo (which is the price where most other website has to offer).

Great company respond on consumer feedbacks and make changes accordingly. Not long ago I did a review on CoolHandle and I mentioned that I dislike their expensive price tags in my CoolHandle Review. Guess what? They responded and made me a special promotion code (WHSR) that gives one-time 20% discount to all CoolHandle shared hosting deals.

  CoolHandle – 20% Discount

That’s right. Visit CoolHandle, copy-and-paste the code WHSR, get 20% discount off from your shared hosting bill.

Should you go with CoolHandle?

If you asked me is CoolHandle recommended yesterday, I would node and say they are not bad. But if you ask me today, then I have no hesitation to tell you a BIG YES. This promo-code thingy improves things greatly and franlyI can’t help but have the perception that CoolHandle is one of the best hosts now.

  Here’s why.

One, after 20% discount using promo code WHSR, CoolHandle shared hosting prices are now at $3.96/mo, $8.76/mo, and $10.36/mo for their Starter, Business, and Pro Package. Yes, considering the web host is giving limited addon domains and MySQL databases for Starter and Business Plans, these after-discount-prices are still not the cheapest.Nevertheless, seeing that we are getting ultra fast server, green hosting features, and great room for hosting upgrades at CoolHandle, the prices are (at least) reasonable.

Two, think about when’s the last time a big hosting company like CoolHandle will read and listen to online reviews? I bet you don’t get a lot of that. This is why I think that the response on this pricey-thingy is a H-U-G-E positive sign for CoolHandle. This means folks at CoolHandle are listening, and working lively in doing C.I. (aka continuous improvement). If you are serious about getting a good web host, I am sure you prefer to stick with the kind of hosts where they care about their reputation and work hard to grow their business.

How to have this CoolHandle Promotion?

It’s pretty easy to use the promotion code on CoolHandle. But for your reference I have made a couple of print screen below and the most important part of it is that you copy-and-paste the right code WHSR.

1. Start ordering from the shared hosting offer page.

2. Pick a new domain or enter existng one.

3. Select your shared hosting plan.

4. Apply the promo code WHSR.

5. And… you are done. Easy?

Following up on the Hostgator Coupon Code post, I am gonna show you something quick about the Gators in this blogpost. You might want to check out my Hostgator Review to see what I think about them, in details; but in case you are sort of in a hurry, this short post should tell you everything you need to know about Hostgator.

Hostgator Uptime Review

Firstly, you need to know that this site, WebHostingSecretRevealed.com, is hosted at Hostgator since year 2009 and I’ve been tracking its uptime since the beginning (that’s how I review a hosting service after all).

Now, check out the graph below – it shows the uptime record of WHSR for the past 14 months.

Translation Please…

I am tracking my site’s uptime using PingDom and the graph is showing WHSR’s uptime record from January 1, 2010 till Febuary 28, 2011. Saw the flat green line? That’s the indicating line representing WHSR’s uptime it is marking on the 100% point. That’s right, WHSR is ‘up and running’ (almost) 24/7 just like this dead-flat line.

In case you wonder, Hostgator scored a 99.96% server uptime for the past 14 months with 3 hours and 44 minutes within this period, and the number of down-times is 33x.

If you have been tracking (and reading) website uptime regularly, you should understand that this is a S-U-P-E-R-B result for a shared-hosted website. I mean, these guys might be a little more expensive than the rest but hey, 99.96% uptime on a shared server! Isn’t that something remarkable and worth paying extra for? By the way, if you look close enough, you are going to see a small ‘valley’ in the middle (that’s 07/19/2010 FYI) and that’s the only unplanned downtime I had with Hostgator in 14 months.

So… there goes my updates on Hostgator’s recent performance – I hope it helps. For full-length evaluation on Hostgator hosting service, check out my Hostgator Review.

In case you are not aware, FatCow is running an awesome (they called it ‘moovelous’) sweepstake and the hosting company is giving some great, great prizes away! A few lucky winners will drive away a Smart ForTwo Coupe, a Vespa scooter, and one of four Shwinn bikes to its customers.

Free car for a $3.67/mo hosting?!

No joke! Buy a $3.67/mo hosting and you stand a chance to win a brand new Smart ForTwo.

Look at the picture below (ladies please, the car not the cute guy!). Deep breath. Close your eyes for 10 seconds. Imagine yourself sitting in the car and driving it around your neighborhood. Don’t you just feel G-R-E-A-T?

To enter FatCow Host Smart Drive Smart Giveaway

Okay I know you want this so here’s how you can get yourself in.

You will automatically receive one entry into the Sweepstakes for doing any one of these: signup for a new hosting account at FatCow now, refer a friend via its affiliate program, add a client to your FatCow reseller account, or be an active FatCow customer with a hosting account with no outstanding account (yes, this means if you are an existing customer you are in automatically).

UNFORTUNATELY, the sweepstake is only open to legal residents of the 50 United States (and D.C.) 18 years or older (rules, here). This means if you are living out of United States (like me ) then you are not included in this promotion. The sweepstake started on May 17, 2010 and ends at 11:59 pm ET on September 30, 2010.

Other things you might want to know

About the car

The Smart ForTwo is a funky urban ultra-compact car. The car is based on a platform developed jointly my Smart and Mitsubishi for space efficient cars. The small size and low weight make this trendy car also one of the most fuel efficient cars barring the hybrid duo from Honda and Toyota. It is also the least expensive one in this list.

Inflation on Internet: 10% Price Increase for .com and .net domains

In case you missed the announcement last year, this is the final reminder that in less than a month time, registration cost for .com and .net domains will increase for 10% at VeriSign.

VeriSign announced that as of July 1, 2010, the registry fee for .com domain names will increase from $6.86 to $7.34 and that the registry fee for .net domain names will increase, from $4.23 to $4.65.

Ref: https://investor.verisign.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=431292

What does this mean to you?

Basically the price-change doesn’t affect much on most webmasters unless you are holding over 1,000 domain names. If so the first thing you should do is, apparently, to renew your expiring domains before July.

The increase is approved by ICANN and in other words this will affect all domain registrars who offer .com and .net registration services. As profit margin is already ultra thin in this field, registrars like GoDaddy will most likely pass on the inflated cost to its end users (aka, you and me!).

Inflation happens all the time, get used to it!

I read quite some rants across several webmaster forums and honestly, I don’t understand why these guys cannot accept the fact that prices of everything will increase.

In fact I would be surprised if the .com and .net price stays stagnant in year 2009-10. After all the business is monopoly by VeriSign and moreover, according to a settlement in for lawsuit between Verisign and ICANN in 2006, the company is allowed to increase their prices on an annual basis with increases of up to 7% per year for .COM.

(Ask yourself, would you do the same if you are allowed, legally, to ask for more money? )
