As you can see the major differences between the two are the quantity of mySQL databases and the control panel software. From what I know, BlueHost runs a tight restriction on the amount of MySQL databases you can add into your account. While they are offering unlimited disk storage and hosting bandwidth, they limit your database capacity at 100.

While most webmasters prefer cPanel (because of familiarity I guess), I don’t see any big dissimilarity between cPanel and vDeck. Hence, I wouldn’t suggest you to use this as a deciding factor for your purchase.

BlueHost cost $83.4 to $95.4 annually (depends on your subscription period); while FatCow, after special discount offer at W.H.S.R., cost $57.96 per year (35% discount from the original $7.5/mo).

From Google Insights (in hosting related categories), BlueHost clearly outranked FatCow in term popularity, with a score of 63 – in contrast of FatCow’s score of 12.

BlueHost searches come from all around the world; while FatCow hosting is interested mainly by the west.

Customer Supports: FatCow vs BlueHost

Both BlueHost and FatCow customers are supported 24/7 via phone, live chat, and email ticketing system.

BlueHost live chat system is powered by AliveChat; while FatCow system is supported by LivePerson. I have personally tested both live chat systems several times and I found both are doing okay. Not that they are doing extraordinary well; but it’s totally acceptable for web hosts in this price range.

Additionally, BlueHost host a user-support forum. BlueHost users can share and solve their problems via message board discussions.

Green Energy Hosting: FatCow vs BlueHost

Electricity consumption (servers and offices) at FatCow is fully offset by wind-generated Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) from Community Energy Inc (CEI) – this makes FatCow hosting 100% green.

On the other hand, there is no news of BlueHost going green so far.

My conclusion: FatCow or BlueHost?

What I think about Bluehost and FatCow hosting?

I spent years with BlueHost as customer and have been using FatCow for more than a year now. In overall, I am happy with both at the moment.

It’s worth noting that I had some really bad time with BlueHost hosting back in January/Febuary 2009 where the server is heavily loaded (sign of unmanaged overselling!) and my database server is on and off broken. Nevertheless, the problem is solved by now.

FatCow hosting, on the other hand, is doing superbly well in my record. Fast and reliable server, responsive customer supports, and peace-of-mind daily backup service – all in just $4.83/mo. This is why I rated them as my top hosting service along with Hostgator.

So who should you go with – FatCow or BlueHost?

At this point of writing, I’m strongly convinced that FatCow is the better choice. Not to say that BlueHost is bad; but the pricing is a huge aspect that separate the two and FatCow is a lot cheaper. Unless you are biased towards BlueHost’s cPanel; else I don’t see why you should choose them over FatCow.

Lunarpages, on the other hand, first started in web hosting business as part of Add2Net Inc. in year 1998; the name “Lunarpages” is introduced in year 2000. At this time of writing, Lunarpages is managed by Ron Riddle and the company operates in One Wilshire and Las Vegas.

Both Lunarpages and Hostgator run their own data centers and offer a wide range of different hosting services – including shared, dedicated, and reseller hosting. This makes comparing the two reasonable as they often appear in the same shopping list.

From Google Insights, the graph clearly indicates that Hostgator is much favored than Lunarpages. More over, Hostgator is showing a strong growth trend in term of popularity where more and more Internet users are searching on Hostgator; while Lunarpages stays more or less the same in term of general popularity.

On dedicated hosting plans, Hostgator’s Standard package provides better features and lower price when compare to Lunarpages top dedicated hosting plan (package name Dedi III). With Hostgator, you get 10 dedicated IP address (in contrast, 2 with Lunarpages), free Fantastico supports, 24/7 supports, server monitoring (in contrast, Lunarpages charge extra $9.99/mo for server monitoring), and best of all – with all these advantages over Lunarpages, the Gator is still charging less on their customer ($219/mo).

There is a H-U-G-E different between Lunarpages and Hostgator when it comes to customer supports.

Lunarpages simply failed to live up to the industry standards on after-sales support – the web host does not provide 24/7 live chat or telephone technical support! On the other hand, Hostgator hosting comes with 24/7 technical support via live chat, telephone, and forum. More over, Hostgator support is done by inhouse staffs, who are more knowledgeable (to the company operations) and responsive.

My conclusion on Hostgator vs Lunarpages

My user experience with Hostgator and Lunarpages

I spent years hosting websites on both Hostgator and Lunarpages. In overall I’m happy with both of their services – especially in term of server reliability. Both web hosts deliver respectable server uptime and fast hosting services. I need little help from the support department thus the lack of 24/7 live chat support in Lunarpages wasn’t bothering me much. Anyhow, it’s worth pointing out that it takes days for Lunarpages to response on my request; while for Hostgator it’s just matter of minutes.

However, I was pretty disappointed with Lunarpages recently as they changed their pricing structures without informing us (as customers) properly. While you might think Lunarpages seems like a good budget hosting choice, the reality is far away from that. The Lunarpages widely-promoted $4.95/mo hosting deal is only available if you are willing to take up the 60 months hosting plan (which is absolutely ridiculous!).

Who should you go with – Hostgator or Lunarpages?

Short answer, Hostgator. You’ll get better hosting features and customer supports in similar or lower price (depends on your hosting plan).

We often hear people complaining web hosting (insert hostname here) sucks but the statement is never backed by quantitative facts and numbers.

Not now anymore.

For all the geeks that can’t resist pouring numbers to every aspect of life, here’s an interesting way to check does your web hosting suck or not:

1. Open an Excel sheet for data processing.
2. Google ‘X-hosting rocks’ and record down the number of results returned, say figure ‘A’.
3. Google ‘X-hosting sucks’ and record down the number of results returned, say figure ‘B’.
4. Divide figure ‘B’ (the number of X-hosting sucks) by the sum of figure A and B.
5. The answer of the equation in (4) is the “Suckage Ratio”- the lower the number, the better the hosting company you’re reviewing.

Example: Calculating the suckage ratio for Bluehost

Take Bluehost for example, when search for the term ‘Bluehost Rocks‘, we get result of 122,000; when search for ‘Bluehost sucks‘, we get 23,200 results. The suckage ratio, thus is equal to 23,200/(23,200 + 122,000) = 0.066 = 6.6%.

The number itself does not convey any meaningful information. However when compare with bunch of other web hosting suckage ratio – it tends to work as a benchmark system to decide whether Bluehost is worth trying or not.

Make sense, huh? This interesting rating method is introduced by Hosting That Sucks where web hosts are rated mainly based on the suckage ratio.

The rating methodology is a good (and creative) way of numerical based analysis, which sometimes is better than review based on personal likes and dislikes.

But you see, the Suckage Ratio can be improved if we implement a little searching trick with Google. What Nor (owner of Hosting That Sucks) used was the search results of ‘X-hosting sucks’ and ‘X-hosting rocks’ where the search term itself can be misleading. A document with just the word ‘sucks’ or ‘X-hosting’ (any host name) might appears in Google’s search result page, which in turn skew the accuracy of our calculation outcome. The twist, is to search with the quotes (“” – something like this) and to divide the number with the popularity of the host name (result returned when we search with the hostname).

The twisted suckage ratio calculation, therefore, is:

The number of Google results in ‘ quoted X-hosting sucks’ divide by the number of Google results in ‘X-hosting’.

Confused? Don’t be. The concept is pretty simple when example is given. Let’s take my other favorite for example – Hostgator. Google “Hostgator Sucks” (with quotes) return 1,650 results; ‘Hostgator’ (without quotes) on the other hand return 2,510,000 results. Thus the twisted suckage ratio = 1,650/2,510,000 x 100% = 0.07%.

To make this post meaningful, I had calculated Suckage Ratio for some of the major hosting and here are my results. (The lower the suckage ratio the better.)

To my surprise, it’s Dot5 Hosting that comes up top in the result (I was expecting Hostgator instead). Dot5 is the hosting with least results in ‘Hostname sucks’, in other words – sucks the least.

Is Suckage Ratio reliable?

Well as said, suckage ratio is just a good numerical way to rate and compare web hosting services. As the formula is rather over-simplified and the input numbers are based on Google’s search index, the rating is nothing better than just a references.

Personally I think it’s just some-what-accountable and wouldn’t take the numbers for too serious.

But then again, it’s fun calculating and seeing the results don’t you think? People always say this and that sucks but they have no hard numbers to support their statement. Well not with web hosting now, you can act nerd say “PowWeb Sucks” and it has a 0.09% suckage score!

Who’s better: Bluehost hosting or iPower?

iPower is a little less popular that that of Bluehost, but has enough users. Why Bluehost is ahead in the competition? Here’s the short analysis.

• Bluehost seems a little expensive as compared to iPower, but exploring the features you’ll find it more cost effective as it allows more resources while resources like disk space, bandwidth, MySQL databases etc are very limited at iPower hosting.

Conclusion: So is Bluehost the better choice?

If you’ve a small or medium scale business, Bluehost will be a good choice without any hesitation, but make sure by having a detailed analysis of features that this is what all you need. In case if your requirements are less than that if offers, try a short period plan of iPower hosting and decide yourself.

The answer? Bluehost (based on Google Insights ).

The result is not that big surprise as I already learned that Bluehost’s hosting the most domains among the three. The company (Bluehost) is in fact knocking on the door of 1,000,000 domain on early April.

However, not everything’s as I expected.

Surprise 1: Lunarpages is falling pretty behind

I am very surprise to see that Lunarpages were not much searched outside United States. Lunarpages’s hosting plan is the cheapest when compare to the other two; but they are the less popular.

All three hosting services are as good with excellent server uptime and loadspeed, top notch customer supports, and features-rich hosting plan. But why Lunarpages is losing so much ground in the International market? I couldn’t come up with any reason except that Hostgator and Bluehost are doing a better job in branding.

Anyhow, I expect they will be catching up fast as I see some good marketing moves around Lunarpages such like the recent fall promotions (unlimited bandwidth/storage at $4.95/mo) and WP themes designs .

Surprise 2: Asia countries are taking over the top spots

We can see that English is still the dominant language around the Internet, but the country searching for hosting services are shifting fast from the west to east.

A quick view on the top 10 country list, you’ll see how welcomed is Hostgator and Bluehost in the Asia countries.
