ReTweet.com (http://www.retweet.com) is recently sold for $250,000 on Flippa.com.

A quarter million, worth it?

A website with $0 profit and a potential lawsuit for a quarter million – Isn’t this amazing? (If you read financial news frequently, that’s a “business” is sold with infinite PE aka price-to-earnings ratio.)

But of course, ReTweet.com is not just another Uncle Joe’s website. The website gets roughly 12 millions visits per month with 26 millions page loads; and the deal comes along with its own URL shortener service (RT.nu). Furthermore, the operational cost (around $500/mo) for such a heavy-traffic site is relative low – thanks to the efficient Amazon EC2 web servers. I have been following the auction quite closely and find it very entertaining.

In case you wish to know about this record-breaking deal (for Flippa.com), check out this blogpost: How Retweet.com was built then sold for $250k.

Confession: I am new to Twitter, I started the Twitter account 3 weeks ago. But yet, I find it extremely convenient and useful to share information and to search for inspiration.

As I mentioned in my Twitter profile, I don’t tweet about my cats or my underwear color. I tweet about industry updates, web development guides, latest hosting promotions, and frivolous (but related) information about the WWW.

There are a lot of changes in hosting industry for the past six months and I have been working hard to reflect these changes in my web host review section – revise web host ratings, new web host reviews, update hosting plans…. (Gosh, I wish I have more time!)

In summary, here are the ‘In-and-out’ of my web hosting reviews.

The winners: FatCow and Hostgator

FatCow hosting is the biggest winner for the past 6 months. Not only that the hosting company grew exponentially in the first quarter of 2009 (user base up 29%); the company also took a huge leap in term of brand image with the introduction of HeiferCratic Oath (credo for customer support) and the recent ‘FatCow Goes Green’ policy. The web host is now rated as the best web host (rated A+) alongside with Hostgator.

Reliable web server, responsive customer supports, wide hosting features, reasonable pricing, and eco-friendly – it’s hard not to like Hostgator on the other hand. I’ve been hosting with Hostgator for more than 4 years, the experience (through out these years!) is nothing but pleasure. Without doubt, I rate them as one of the best and would recommend them to all my friends and family.

(Hmmmm coincidentally, both of my top rated web hosts are related to animals! )

The loser: Lunarpages

Lunarpages is the only web host with major drop in term of rating – their score dropped from A- to B.

Why? Mainly because they changed their pricing quietly (I’m an existing customer and heck I don’t even get a notification e-mail!). As for now, their original $4.95/mo hosting deal is only available for shoppers who are willing to signup 5 years in advance (which sounds ridiculous to me).

Sum up with the fact that Lunarpages provides no livechat/phone supports, I’m convinced that Lunarpages doesn’t deserve to be in my A-list anymore.

Bluehost is another web host with dropping scores, falling slightly from A to A-, mainly due to my bad experience with their server in January and February. Everything is fixed and alright now; but I’ll just observe them a little longer before revising their rating.

New Kids on the block: InMotion, JustHost, and GreenGeeks

Both JustHost and InMotion hosting services are amazing – both grabbed the seats in my top 5 hosting list.

InMotion provide supreme quality hosting service – which is best for business web hosting. They are one of the very few that allows users to select their server location (Los Angeles, CA or Washington, DC). Also, InMotion has the longest full-money-back trial period – up to 90 days.

JustHost, on the other hand, is a new web host name that focuses in shared hosting service. Managed by a group of young talented entrepreneurs (a few directors in JustHost have experience in owning and running their own web hosting companies), business is growing ultra-fast at JustHost. They hit the 50,000 customers in first year and at this time of writing, they are looking at the 200,000 mark.

GreenGeeks is a hosting company that focuses on clean energy hosting. In fact, they are the “Greenest Hosting Company” as GreenGeeks replaces, with wind power, 3 times the amount of energy consumed by their web servers. This makes all their customers’ websites “300% green”.

To learn more about these hosting services, check out my detail reviews on InMotion Hosting, JustHost, and GreenGeeks. Also, I conducted an Interview with Sunil Saxena, co-owner and EVP of InMotion Hosting not long ago – the Q&A tells a lot about InMotion, go read it.

And without surprise, I see Hostgator fighting back with Adwords (ouch!) and their own Hostgator Twitter page.

In certain point of view, I think being attacked by cybersquatters is something worth congratulating – as it shows you now own a big name on the Internet. Right?

Updates on WebHostingSecretRevealed.com

For months I had been working very hard in building content and web traffics for WebHostingSecretRevealed.com (W.H.S.R.).

Some of these articles, such as 43 ways to make your blog stand out from the rest and 23 must see free blogging platforms, were much welcomed in social networking websites and generated some good volume of web traffics; new article categories, such like Interviews and Web Host FAQ, were launched; and last but not least, I’m writing loads (and expecting more) of web hosting tutorials and guides.

Several minor changes and updates were made on my hosting reviews but nothing’s worth mentioning here. At this moment, there was no extra web host tested nor reviewed as my resources (both time and money) are limited. I’m planning to write about Gate.com (a hosting company that I had been using since year 2006) and hopefully by the end of next month the review can be ready.

In case you have any suggestion for W.H.S.R., please do not hesitate to email me at Jerry [a] WebHostingSecretRevealed.com.

Yes, affiliate marketing blogs are normally full of craps and I don’t read them often. I doubt more than 80% of the affiliate marketing bloggers do not understand what they are talking about. They can’t sell, thus they just teach to sell.

But not this one on Stuart’s.

I had been reading on Earners Blog for some hours since yesterday and I find his blog resourceful. Since most of you guys here are shopping for a web host and starting a new website; why not learn how to monetize your website in the same time? Affiliate business is a lucrative business and I recommend all webmasters to learn about it. Even if you can’t make your living on affiliate income, it would be nice to pay off your hosting cost with some sales commission.

Right? Now go check out Earners Blog.

(No, I don’t get paid for this post! I just like the blog and think you should read it as well.)

First off, Happy New Year! Wish year 2009 will be a fruitful year for every one of us here. I’m sorry that my new year wishes didn’t come earlier – I was pretty loaded up with all the parties and (surprise surprise) updating works at W.H.S.R.

So here you go, some quick updates on the website’s recent changes.

W.H.S.R. Google PR updated!

Guess what! Google PR is updated and my website is now officially PR5. Yeah it’s true that Google PR means nothing nowadays and I am not seeing any significant boost in term of traffics after Google PR updates; however, it feels good when you know that your work is being credited (by Google PR and by people who link back to my website).

As the website’s PR reach a satisfying level now, I’ll start looking out for website partners. In case you run a web hosting blog/website and feels like teaming up with me (homepage link exchange!), please don’t hesitate to write in: Jerry [a] WebHostingSecretRevealed.com.

WebHostingPad is now my favorite budget web host!

Dot5 Hosting used to be my pick when it comes to budget hosting.

Not anymore now. Dot5 Hosting turned kinda problematic recently and coincidentally I noticed that WebHostingPad is doing some major improvement – after studying and justifying both, WebHostingPad is promoted as my Best Budget Hosting now.

Fine tuning on website designs

I had done some fine tuning on W.H.S.R. designs back in early December. Several new link structures are added in order to provide better site navigation.

Web Hosting Re-review

Last but not least, there are a lot of updates with my rating on other hosting. After more than 6 months of testing, I’m re-rating some of the hosting services I reviewed earlier. Frankly the rework is pretty tedious but I’m glad that my hosting recommendation is more time-accurate by now.

Among the major changes: Hostmonster, after disappointing me for several times, is de-ranked to a “B”. After an in-depth discussion with a current IX Web Hosting user, I decided to level up their service to C rating (from C-). Also, WebHostingPad is the biggest winner for this round as the hosting company jumped from B to A- rating.

Well, that’s all for the quick updates. Till then, take care and Happy New Year 2009 once again!

Don’t you wish to know the web host behind a website sometimes?

Uhhhm okay, maybe it’s not you but I’m always curious about who’s hosting who. I often spending long hours searching for website’s host – just out of curiosity. The hard way of doing this would be searching a site’s whois and if I’m lucky (that the site’s info is not privated) I’ll get what I want (the web host) pretty soon.

Who is hosting this?

The easy way? Use WhoIsHostingThis.

Launched in summer 2007 by two web developers in Zagreb, Gordan Orlic and Stan Sredl and was bought over by London-based Quality Nonsense Ltd in August 2008, WhoIsHostingThis is a webmaster tool that lets you discover which web host a website uses. Simply keyin any website address into the search box and hit enter, the tool will return with the result of the website IP, web host, name servers, and a brief profile of the website.

Example: Check out who is hosting W.H.S.R.?

Sidenote: Hey if you got the name of web host hosting the website that you like a lot, why not let me know about it so that I can test and list it in my hosting reviews? I can be reached at jerry [a] webhostingsecretrevealed.com
