1&1 Review

1&1 Hosting started in 1988 when a small German company called 1&1 took over marketing activities for BTX, the troubled online service run by T-Com. 1&1 had been expanding fast with their top notch one-stop hosting service and the company is the world’s biggest web host nowadays with 7.46 million customers.

Sure 1&1 is huge from the figures. A customer base of 7.5 million – that’s 7 times more than the number of customers at Bluehost and Hostmonster combined. But hey, being the largest isn’t the best. So let’s check out what’s up with 1&1 hosting services.

What’s good about 1 & 1 Hosting?

Cost Effective

The major advantage it has over others is that it’s equally cost effective for a single site, a group of sites, small business, and for developers’.

Host multiple Domains In Single Account: As many leading hosting companies like Bluehost, Lunarpages, and Hostmonster provide you with this option to host all (unlimited as long as the domain is registered with 1&1) your sites under one account, you can do same here.

Good Support

Including online FAQs, and Email and phone support for all packages. Also offers money back guarantee.

What’s not-so-good about 1 & 1 Hosting?

Bad Combination Of Disk Space & MySQL Databases

1 & 1 hosting though offers enough disk space and bandwidth that’s too good for hosting multiple sites, but by limiting the number of databases, one may find it not a good option.

For instance I need to have at least 3 databases for each of my site, and hence I’ll need 30 MySQL databases for my ten sites, keeping the disk space and bandwidth enough for me. But, if it’s just 25, I may not find it feasible even the other resources offered are too good to continue.

Also, there’s little flexibility for 1&1 customers who signed up with 1&1 Beginner or Home hosting plan. Web hosting features like Server Side Includes (SSI) and RatePoint system are unavailable for these customers.

1 & 1 Hosting Features

1&1 packaged their web hosting services into 4 major plans – 1&1 Beginner, 1&1 Home, 1&1 Business, and 1&1 Beveloper. We’ll check out 1&1 Home hosting features here.

Conclusion: Is 1&1 Hosting Recommended?

Hosting trusted by over 3 million sites!

Overall 1 & 1 is a good choice and can adjust your requirements.

If you want to host a single site, it can be the best choice, but for multiple sites and or business account may need a detailed analysis by you, and the best way to evaluate their performance is to test their service. You can host a single site initially, and if it goes well, bring other sites of yours to the same server. On the other hand, if you think 1 & ! Hosting might not be the right choice for you, read reviews on my recommendations: Hostgator, Bluehost, Lunarpages, and FatCow.
